Wilson Creek Watershed Improvement Project, Rugby, VA
-
This project will reduce chronic erosion and sedimentation coming from horse trails, protecting 15 stream miles downstream from the crossings. It will also protect headwater seeps from trampling erosion, and allow 300 acres of riparian vegetation to grow, further shading the stream and filtering field runoff. Riparian restoration will favor native red spruce, which in turn will provide a cool, moist
micro-climate consistent with maintaining wild Brook Trout streams. The project cost is $120,000 and the estimated socioeconomic benefit is $8.2 million.

This folder contains information on the three habitat projects funded in FY17. Collectively these projects will remove 3 fish passage barriers to reconnect 92.5 miles of habitat and restore 3.44 miles of in-stream habitat for wild Brook Trout by removing Rainbow Trout, an invasive species. These projects were funded by the EBTJV and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for $112,642. An additional $589,470 in partner contributions are expected. The estimated socioeconomic value of these projects is $52.7 million.

Dam Removal, East Branch Passumpsic River, East Burke, Vermont
-
Removal of this deteriorating dam will improve natural flow regimes, free-flowing river conditions, water quality and temperature, sediment release and transport, and connectivity resulting in re-opening 99 migratory miles on the East Branch of the Passumpsic River. In addition, 3.4 acres of shrub-scrub wetland will be enhanced by removal of the dam and subsequent restoration work. Total project cost is $325,000.

Enhancing and Connecting Wild Brook Trout Populations in VT’s West Mountain Wildlife Management Area
-
This project will replace one stream crossing and remove another that currently prevents the movement of fish and other aquatic organisms in the West Mountain Pond watershed. The new structures will open 2.5 stream miles and permit fish and other aquatic organisms to move in search of cold water refugia, food, and spawning habitat. In addition, woody habitat will be restored to 1.25 stream. Total project cost is $143,000.

Restoring a Brook Trout Metapopulation within the Little Cataloochee Creek & Anthony Creek Watersheds, Great Smoky Mountains National Park
-
The project will result in the removal of Rainbow Trout from 1.6 stream miles of the Little Cataloochee and 1.7 stream miles of Anthony Creek watersheds. Successful removal of these invasive fish will allow native Brook Trout to be re-introduced into these stream reaches. Total project cost is $234,112.
